The Legend of Govardhan Dharan
The tradition of offering Chhappan Bhog (56 royal delicacies) originates from the divine Govardhan Leela in Dwapara Yuga. When Lord Krishna lifted the massive Govardhan Hill on the little finger of his left hand to shield the residents of Vrindavan from the torrential rains sent by Lord Indra, he stood continuously for 7 days without consuming a single morsel of food.
Traditionally, Lord Krishna enjoyed 8 meals a day (Ashtaprahara Bhojana). Having fasted for 7 continuous days, the grateful Brijwasis prepared a feast of 56 distinct dishes (7 days × 8 meals = 56 delicacies) to show their profound love and gratitude.
